Panthers win three of five at Canyon tourney

Liberty Hill entered the Canyon tournament in New Braunfels with only a handful of games left to fine-tune its engine before embarking on district play and the Panthers used it to their advantage in winning three of the five contests they played over the three-day tourney.

First up on Thursday was Class 6A Clemens, which entered the contest with a sparkling 11-1 mark on the season and it was the Buffaloes who prevailed over the Panthers by a 59-56 score.

However, Liberty Hill bounced right back with a 49-47 overtime victory over Class 6A Eastwood of El Paso later in the day in a game in which the Panthers trailed the Troopers, 23-22, at halftime, then outscored them by the same narrow margin in the second half, precipitating the extra period.

On Friday, Liberty Hill defeated host Class 5A Canyon, 62-49, before dropping its second contest of the day to Class 5A Weiss, 63-56, after the score was tied at 29-29 at halftime before falling to the Wolves.

Finally, having split their opening four games of the tournament, the Panthers finished strong on Saturday with an 84-64 win over TAPPS Class 4A John Paul II of New Braunfels, leading the Guardians, 49-31, at the half on the way to victory and a 3-2 record for the weekend.

Liberty Hill (11-3) will next travel to old rivals Burnet on Friday before opening the district schedule at home against Cedar Park on Tuesday at 1:45 p.m.
