WACO — The Liberty Hill Panthers defeated Waco Connally 45-25 on Friday night at Cadet Stadium. Junior fullback Jon Shannon carried the Panthers’ rushing attack for the third straight week, running for 225 yards.

Shannon also rushed for four touchdowns, leaning heavily on the Panthers’ offensive line, which had another strong performance.

“I thought our fullback ran real well,” Liberty Hill Coach Jerry Vance said. “I thought we were pretty well in control of everything. It was a good game, that’s a good football team—one of the most talented teams we have seen or will see.”

On defense, the Panthers held their opponents to six points in the first half. With the lead, Vance put his second-team defense in for a majority of the third and fourth quarters.

The Panthers gained 510 yards on the ground and scored 40-plus points for the third straight game this season, continuing to recover from a season-opening loss to La Grange in Week 1.

Liberty Hill did most of its damage in the second quarter and scored 24 points. Shannon scored all three of the Panthers’ touchdowns and set up Lucas Rizzotto’s late-second quarter field goal.

Later in the game sophomore quarterback Garrett Wright came in and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown. Wright relieved senior Nick Hernandez, who had scored on a 6-yard touchdown run earlier in the first quarter.

For Connally, Brown and Williams connected twice in the fourth quarter for touchdowns, slightly cutting into Liberty Hill’s lead. But, the touchdowns couldn’t spark a comeback for the Cadets.

Liberty Hill improved its record to 3-1 and will travel to Abilene Wylie next Friday. Connally (2-2) lost its second straight and gave up 40-plus points for the second straight week.
