LHHS Cheerleaders place 7th in State Spirit Championship
On Jan. 14, the Liberty Hill Varsity Cheerleaders participated in the first ever UIL State Spirit Championship. This was a different kind of competition where the girls were graded on a cheer, a performance to the school fight song and a performance to Liberty Hill band music. Sixty-three 4A teams were registered to compete. After a long day of preliminaries and finals, the varsity cheerleaders received 7th in the state.
“This is a huge accomplishment for these girls, who went into the competition a little blind since this was the first year,” said cheer coach Katy Leiskau. “Results are posted but what the scores do not tell you is the number of competitors that were on the mat. 4A teams could bring up to 20 cheerleaders. Almost every other school in the finals had at least 18 girls. Liberty Hill varsity squad had only 13. So, to have such a high rank with a smaller number is a true testament to the girls.”
