STAFF NOTEBOOK: Save the date – July 4, 2013!
Nobody would ever question our patriotism here in Liberty Hill. And if someone ever does—well, they better prepare for a fight. By definition we are what this country depends on most, God fearing, law abiding, flag saluting, tax paying folks. But then, what happened to our Fourth of July celebrations?
On the Independence Day holiday, Liberty Hill stood alone with a sad distinction. We didn’t actually gather en masse to show our patriotic spirit. Families with small children or extended family loaded their vehicles and headed to Bertram, Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown or even down to Austin for fireworks, music and outdoor fun.
The greater Liberty Hill community did not have a bonafide Fourth of July celebration and we think that’s too bad.
In 2013, Liberty Hill needs to revive its former Fourth of July celebration with a parade, fireworks and music show. This community has a rich history of our young people seeking to serve our country. The Veterans Memorial Wall downtown contains the names of our citizens who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country. Every year at high school graduation we see some seniors already dressed in military uniforms. Nobody can cast a doubt as to what we think about our country, but you’d never know it by the silence on July 4th.
We understand the economy hasn’t quite bounced back from the hard times that every family, business and citizen has felt come to their door. And we know the taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for a big party when we are debating over the essential services to provide. However, as a community, we could all come together to make this happen in July 2013. Some of us could contribute a little bit financially, others could pitch in a little more if they felt so inclined. But we all have some service we could provide, something we could offer.
Local businessman Don Bebee, who in previous years dipped into his own pocket book to pay for fireworks shows in the past, attempted to organize and orchestrate several patriotic events this year with the end goal being a memorable Independence Day celebration. But without additional donations and community support, the event was out of reach.
We supported BeBee’s efforts then and we still do. The Liberty Hill Independent and our parent company Free State Media, will begin the process for July 4, 2013, by offering to be a corporate sponsor for the event. And we will work to encourage our advertising partners to join with us as we plan an event to remember.
Liberty Hill needs its public Fourth of July Celebration back. We’re in, are you?
