Just in time for holiday decorating and gift-giving, Simply Home Décor & More is open and offering a tasteful array of home décor items, wedding and baby shower gifts, kitchenware,  collegiate items and more.

“I’ve always been crafty, and I’ve always loved home items,” says Tami Spearman, owner. “I love my home to feel comfortable, and that’s what my aim is with this store. I want you to be able to come here, spend a small amount and spruce up a room, and be content with where you are.

“In Liberty Hill, we have limited retail shopping. I want to have a different appeal than the stores that are already here,” she said. “I know people are tired of driving into Austin to shop. I want them to stay here, shop local, and be able to find gifts and things for their own homes.”

Mrs. Spearman has researched the trends in home decor and furnished her store with some of the latest products.

“The big trends right now are definitely the subway signs and wood signs. Birds are still big. Lots of burlap, magnet boards, stuff you can use for the kitchen and office,” she said, adding that she scours the wholesale market in Dallas for unique finds for her customers. She also visits specialty shops in Fredricksburg and Salado to stay on top of the latest decorating trends.

Located on State Highway 29 in a remodeled house, Mrs. Spearman and her family did the majority of the renovations themselves. Her children helped with the painting.

“They are excited about the store, but I think they were ready for school to start,” she laughed.

Formerly a rental house, Simply Home’s new home has been “a little bit of everything. Everyone has a different story to tell,” Mrs. Spearman said. In addition to repainting, the Spearmans replaced flooring and kitchen countertops.

Each room has a different theme.

“We’ve got a room of items for girls, and I’ve added baby items to that. We’ve got fall décor, and the kitchen holds all the kitchen items. Soon, we’ll start displaying the Christmas items,” she said.

While preparing the building for an Oct. 2 opening has been a challenge, thinking of creative ways to boost sales has not.

“Right now, I’m excited about November. We’re going to be doing a fall decorating class, where you can submit a picture of your décor, with items bought from the store,” she said. “In December, I’m working out a wish list program.”

She explained that the store would be open one evening allowing ladies the opportunity to enjoy appetizers while building a wish list.

Later, the gentlemen will be invited to come and look at the items they selected and pick out the “perfect gift.”

Mrs. Spearman attributed that idea to her pastor’s wife.

“She came in for an early look around, to see what I had. She said, ‘I’m going to make a list for my husband.’ I thought it would be a neat idea,” she said.

Soon, Mrs. Spearman hopes to offer personalized wedding registries.

“There will be an area of the store where brides can pick out items and have a display along with their engagement photos. That way, their wedding guests can see the things they’d like to have,” she said.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Mrs. Spearman was a teacher for the Liberty Hill Independent School District.

“I taught four years of junior English. I quit teaching to get my Master’s in Curriculum. Things started happening, and I ended up taking a year off,” she said. “I volunteered at my church a lot. I eventually decided just to go for it, and open a store.”

Still in contact with her former students, some of whom are now having children of their own, she said she tries to keep them in mind when buying merchandise for babies.

For now, Mrs. Spearman hasn’t figured out how much of a change owning a retail business will be from teaching. “I’ll tell you in a month,” she jokes.

Mrs. Spearman and her family moved to Liberty Hill from Round Rock. She and her husband, Jeff, a spinal implant salesman, both grew up in Brownwood.

“We grew up in a small town. My friend has a store there, so that kind of inspired me,” she said.
