Panthers rush to area championship

Spurred by four touchdowns in the first quarter, the Panthers ran all over the Gonzales Apaches to win the Area championship 51-3 Friday night at Canyon Lake.
“I thought our kids played pretty well,” said head coach Jerry Vance.
“It’s always real nice to have that breathing room.”
Jon Shannon took off for a 54-yard touchdown on the first play of the Panthers’ second possession.
The Apaches tried to answer with a score of their own, but were forced to punt. Dylan Joiner took the punt 83-yards back to the Panther end zone to put Liberty Hill up 14-0.
Gonzales got three plays off before the defense came up huge again, this time with Carter Ware returning an interception 43-yards for the score.
After another Gonzales punt, Caleb Guerin took the ball and rushed 68-yards for the touchdown.
The Apaches finally found the scoreboard after a 36-yard field goal in the second.
But the Panthers responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Gage Fulps to take a 34-3 halftime lead.
Slater Cummins nailed a 15-yard field goal in the third, along with 6 extra point kicks on the game.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Garrett Wright hit Thomas Gillintine for a 36-yard touchdown.
Liberty Hill still had time to score again, this time with freshman Kyle Harrison getting the score on a 15-yard run.
The Panthers will face Waco La Vega next week for the regional quarterfinal. Game date and location to be determined.
