Panthers on the prowl

With cooler fall weather approaching, Liberty Hill cross country runners can start to expect better workouts and times.
“The cooler weather does help with workouts in the morning,” Liberty Hill Coach Kim Holt said. “The kids seem to have better workouts when the weather gets cooler. We have yet to run in a meet with the cooler weather, but when we do the kids usually have better times.”
While that may be the case, it’s hard to improve on what the Panthers did on a hot and humid day at the Pflugerville ISD Invitational last Friday.
In the Division 2 varsity girls race, Liberty Hill finished with a perfect score of 15 after five runners placed first through fifth.
Sophomore McKynzie King finished first overall with a time of 12 minutes, 12.68 seconds. Junior Danielle Rimann finished second with a time of 12:41.54, while freshman Courtney Peterson finished third overall with a time of 12:49.26.
Sophomore Hannah Manning finished fourth with a time of 12:55.28 and senior Chelsea Cole finished fifth with a time of 12:56.49.
The Liberty Hill Varsity Boys team also finished in first place in the team standings with 51 points.
“The boys team has been a big surprise this year,” Holt said. “They have stepped up and done really well in the meets so far. They are really competing hard.”
Sophomore Clayton Nance finished fourth overall with a time of 17:46.24. He was followed closely by sophomore Ryan Ray, who finished in seventh. Senior Garrett Cummings finished 10th with a time of 18:14.44.
Juniors Andrew Frerichs (18:44.77) and Clayton Luckadoo (18:57.35) finished in 14th and 16th place, respectively.
The junior varsity girls also finished in first place with a team score of 48 points. Sophomore Emhely Guzman finished first with a time of 13:55.26. Freshman Hannah Smirl finished fifth with a time of 14:29.48.
The Junior Varsity Boys team finished in 11th place as a team, with freshman Alex Albarran finishing as the JV boys top runner.
The Liberty Hill Junior High cross country teams were also in action last week and ran at Brownwood.
The seventh and eighth grade boys combined and won first place in their division, while the seventh grade girls won first place as well. The eighth grade girls finished in second place.
The top finisher for the seventh grade and eighth grade boys was eighth grader Nick Roth who finished second overall. On the eighth grade girls team, Sarah Bittner finished third overall. On the seventh grade girls team, Trinity Hardcastle was the top finisher for the Panthers.
