M&L Pharmacy to close its doors Sept. 24

M&L Pharmacy, a Liberty Hill landmark since 1988, will close its doors for the last time Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Larry Wehlman, who is retiring, and his business partner, Darrell “Mo” Moellenberndt, sold the pharmacy to a small company in Florida that was looking to expand its business in Texas and planned to keep the store open.
But one week before the parties were set to close on the deal, Wehlman said he learned that the Florida company he was selling to had been purchased by CVS Pharmacy.
CVS Pharmacy will close the Liberty Hill store and move all of M&L customer files to its Leander location at 500 North Bagdad Road, Wehlman said.
“We didn’t intend to sell Liberty Hill out,” Wehlman told The Independent on Wednesday. “While I’m glad to get to retire, I have a sad feeling that it didn’t work out the way we intended it to.”
Wehlman said he and his partner had been talking about selling the pharmacy for some time, and one day they were contacted by the company in Florida that was interested in purchasing the business. Wehlman said he was ready to retire and Moellenberndt planned to continue working at Scott & White Hospital.
“They offered us a real good price, so we’re happy about that,” he said. “But I was hoping for that joyous feeling, and it hasn’t turned out like that.”
Wehlman said M&L customers looking to fill prescriptions after Tuesday will be automatically transferred to the CVS Pharmacy at 500 N. Bagdad Road in Leander 78641. That pharmacy will accept all M&L prescription bottles and refill them as prescribed. CVS will honor all forms of insurance that were accepted by M&L Pharmacy, Wehlman said.
CVS, which is just over nine miles away from Liberty Hill, will answer calls made to M&L after Tuesday.
He said customers who prefer to use a different pharmacy are not obligated to use CVS. Prescriptions can be transferred elsewhere.
“We appreciate the Liberty Hill community for the years of support they have given us,” Wehlman said. “That has meant the world to us.”
Wehlman and Moellenberndt opened M&L Pharmacy in downtown Liberty Hill in 1988, and two years later, moved to the current location at 14871 W. State Highway 29.
