The Panthers rebounded from a season opening loss with a statement win over the visiting Brenham Cubs 41-14 last Friday at Panther Stadium.
“I was really proud of the way our kids played, they did a great job both on offense and defense,” said head coach Jerry Vance.
“I thought we improved dramatically in both areas. Consequently, I think we went out with more confidence. The first game is out of the way, the nerves are out of the way, they’ve been in the war already and I think with that confidence, they performed at what we thought they could do.”
Brenham got the ball first, but couldn’t convert on the series.
On the Panthers’ first offensive play, they fumbled the ball, but a personal foul called against Brenham moved the ball 10 yards forward. After working down the field, running back Jon Shannon ran the ball in from the one-yard line with four minutes left in the first quarter to put the Panthers first touchdown on the board.
The Cubs’ second offensive possession ended after four tries.
To start the second quarter, TB Freddie White found a hole in the line for a 31-yard run for the Panthers’ second touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff, Liberty Hill successfully converted a short kick to get the ball back at the 27-yard line. Five plays later, Shannon broke through the middle for 13 yards and another touchdown to put the Panthers up 21-0.
“There are certain people you don’t want to kick off to because they’re fast and they’ll run by you, so you try and put it in places where maybe they’re not as talented,” Vance said.
“We’re fortunate we have a kicker who can do that and the kid just ran away from the ball and left it sitting there.”
Brenham had a long possession, but couldn’t get any points on the board.
Facing a third down and 18 late in the first half, quarterback Garrett Wright threw a 25-yard pass to Gage Fulps to put the Panthers up 28-0 heading into the break.
Coming out of the break, Liberty Hill had a sloppy third quarter, giving up Brenham’s only two touchdowns for the game on a 37-yard pass and allowing the Cubs to land on a Panther fumble in the end zone, after scoring on a run from Justin Burkett.
Fulps tacked on the final seven points with an 18-yard run in the fourth quarter.
With the win, the Panthers move to 1-1 on the season, and will travel to Brownwood Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
