Donald Sullivan Lunsford passed away December 31, 2017, with his beloved twin sons at his side.
Don was born in Georgetown on May 13, 1949, to Macy Sullivan Lunsford and Bernice Pate Lunsford. He died in Temple, Texas, following a long illness. Those who knew him longest remember that he was a free spirit even as a small boy, happiest when having adventures on the Hill Country ranches where he grew up. Don is also remembered for his generosity, willing to give anything he had to help family, friends, and the occasional stranger. He was also a regular contributor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Jordan’s place, the youth activity center created in memory of his late grandson.
Don served in the US Army 1969-1972, during which he served a one-year tour of duty in Viet Nam with the 20th Infantry. Don was honored with the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for heroism and selfless courage. He also received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in a separate engagement. Don cherished the relationships he maintained with his Army brothers throughout his life.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Macy and Bernice Lunsford, son Alan Johns, and grandson Jordan Lunsford.
He is survived by sons Jerry Don Lunsford and Billy Don Lunsford of Jarrell; sisters June Lincoln and Bessie Lunsford, and brother Wesley Lunsford, all of Liberty Hill. He also leaves behind a host of friends and loved ones.
Don was laid to rest at Whiteley Cemetery on January 5, 2018, following a memorial service at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel officiated by Reverend Michael East.
