Cross country sweeps at district
By Scott Akanewich
Only last week at the Battlin’ Badger Invitational in Lampasas, junior Ayanna Donwerth won the girls’ varsity race, with freshman teammate Zaila Smith crossing the line in third place.
A week later on the same course, the Panthers’ pair swapped positions, as Smith won the district event in a time of 11:56.1 with Donwerth third (12:02.5).
However, the rest of their teammates continue to get closer to the top two, as sophomore Tyler Goode was fourth in 13:05.3, with senior Hannah Johnson (seventh, 13:21.3) and sophomore Emma Hiebner (11th, 13:29.9) rounding out the points positions and helping Liberty Hill to a team title with 26 points, which easily outdistanced second-place Salado’s 52.
Freshman Natalie Roth finished 12th in 13:30.5, while senior Lindsee Miller was 13th in 13:32.9.
The Panthers’ boys squad also claimed a victory with a winning score of 26 points to runner-up Salado, who had 65.
Senior Kevin Berber was second in 16:00.8, while fellow senior Gabe Diaz finished third in 16:17.1, with Jacob Russell (fifth, 16:26.1), Isaiah De La Garza (sixth, 16:49.8) and Gregory Miller (10th, 17:09.0) completing the top five Panthers finishers.
Cade Johnson (11th, 17:18.7) and Brandon Colicher (17th, 18:05.9) also finished.
Liberty Hill will next compete at the regional meet in Corpus Christi on Oct. 28.
