Annie Irlene Brown
Annie Irlene Walker Brown, 84, longtime resident of Liberty Hill, Texas, died April 25, 2012. She was born to the late Irl and Annie Walker on November 23, 1927 in Trent, Texas. She graduated from Merkel High School in Merkel, Texas in 1941 at age 14. That fall, she became the youngest student ever to enroll at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where she was a member of and twirler for the Cowgirl Band.
At age 17, she became a fourth grade teacher in Sylvester, Texas where she later met and married the late Cadmus Brown, Jr. Although she taught in several public schools across Texas, most of her career was as a high school English teacher in Liberty Hill, Texas.
Irlene was a founding member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberty Hill. She always loved to read and was a history buff, primarily interested in the history and culture of Texas and the Southwest. She wrote poetry and briefly had a business composing and editing tributes and memorials.
Irlene is preceded in death by her parents, Irl and Annie Walker, infant daughter Pamela, son Tommy, husband Cadmus Brown, Jr., and brother Jimmy Reeves Walker.
She is survived by three children: son Cadmus Irl Brown and wife Sharon of Georgetown, daughter Sybil Lieurance and husband Jim of Peoria, Arizona, and daughter Marla Shell and husband Steve of Georgetown; and a brother, Gaston Walker of Hurst, Texas. She is also survived by five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and former students.
Special angels in her life who also mourn her loss are: Janet Milam, neighbor, caregiver, friend and “other daughter”; Doris Jean “Jerry” Pope, her roommate at Park Place Care Center advocate and best friend; and the skilled and caring staff of Park Place Care Center.
The family received guests for a time of visitation at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, April 27, 2012. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 28, 2012 in the chapel of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Neal Landry officiating. Interment followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill.
Serving as pallbearers were Tommy Brown, Matt Shell, Mark Shell, Kirt Shell, Steve Shell and Jim Lieurance. Serving as an honorary pallbearer was Jeff Sorrell.
