LEANDER — Food, fellowship and family fun are all on tap for Saturday, August 2, when Meals on Wheels hosts a barbecue lunch and fundraiser at Leander VFW Post 10427. The post is located at 8760 FM 2243, just east of Highway 183 and 183A. Barbecue plates, complete with side dishes, are $10. Dell Computers has donated the brisket and sausage. The band Gilbert and Friends will provide musical entertainment, playing old-time country music, gospel and polkas. All proceeds from the barbecue and accompanying silent auction will benefit Meals on Wheels programs at 351 N. Bagdad Road, Leander. Approximately two dozen auction items – including a $700 necklace from Cedar Park Jewelry – will be put up for bid. Meals on Wheels serves about 1,200 clients in Williamson and Burnet counties, including clients in Liberty Hill. In addition to delivering hot lunches five days a week, the program provides emergency shelf-stable meals to its homebound clients during inclement weather. The local nonprofit also operates Senior Centers – where seniors gather for food and fellowship – including one at 351 N. Bagdad Road, Leander. WBC Opportunities’ Meals on Wheels also operates Senior Centers in Georgetown, Round Rock, Taylor, Burnet and Marble Falls. Although donations are accepted, senior citizens are not charged for these services and no clients are ever turned away because of an inability to pay. Typical lunches consist of an entrée – such as chicken or ham – plus a vegetable or salad, bread or rolls, milk and dessert. During 2013, Meals on Wheels served 144,000 hot lunches at its congregate sites and through home deliveries. Tickets for the August 2 barbecue and silent auction may be purchased in advance or at the door. Tickets are available at the Meals on Wheels Senior Center in Leander, 351 N. Bagdad Road. For more information call (512) 259-0288. Additionally, donations may be made by check to WBC Opportunities and mailed to 604 High Tech Drive, Georgetown, Texas, 78626. Online donations may be made at WBCO.net. Meals on Wheels is a program of Williamson Burnet County Opportunities, a non-profit organization that also serves Head Start and Early Head Start. WBCO also assists thousands in Williamson and Burnet counties with affordable housing and basic needs.
