JV basketball teams split wins to start the season

The Liberty Hill boys and girls Junior Varsity basketball teams split wins this week.

The girls lost to Rouse 47-34 on Monday night. The girls were down 25-22 at halftime, but weren’t able to overcome the athleticism of the Rouse team in the second half.

In the first quarter, the Lady Panthers cut the deficit to 12-10 after a drive by Autumn Lange ended with an easy layup. Victoria Stephens then hit a shot from the low post to tie the game at 12-all to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Rouse started to pull away and took a ten-point, 22-12 lead after a three-pointer. The Lady Panthers battled back to score six straight points and cut the deficit to 22-18. Lange’s drive in the line ended with her getting fouled and making the basketball. Lange converted on the and-one opportunity to make it 22-19 with 1:52 remaining before halftime. Lange drove the lane on the next possession and was fouled on a push, giving her the one-and-one bonus. Lange hit both free throws and cut the lead to 23-21 with 0:45 seconds remaining. At halftime, the Lady Panthers trailed 25-22.

In the third quarter, Rouse hit two free throws to take a five-point lead. Abbi Shelton hit a shot from the short-corner to cut the lead to three. Rouse then hit a three-pointer on their next possession to go up eight points. Rouse would end the third period with a ten-point lead.

Shelton hit a shot from underneath the basketball to start the fourth quarter. Lange then hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 37-31.

The Lady Panthers got into foul trouble with five minutes remaining in the game and allowed Rouse to take an 11-point lead with 4:08 remaining. Sarah Buck hit a shot from the elbow to cut the lead to 44-33, but the Panthers couldn’t find enough energy to pull any closer and lost 47-34.

The Junior Varsity boys team defeated Lehman in the Panthers’ Den on Tuesday night. The JV team out rebounded Lehman and forced several turnovers to get the narrow 64-62 victory.

Carson Lowe stole a pass from Lehman with two seconds remaining in the game to seal the Panthers’ win.

In the first quarter, Lehman jumped out to a 5-2 lead after hitting a three-pointer with 6:02 remaining. Lehman then converted a basket and an and-one opportunity to take an 8-2 lead.

Lehman would hit another bucket from the short-corner to take an eight point lead with 5:44 remaining.

A basket by Bailey Fleming got the Panthers offense going. Brady Lochte was fouled on a drive with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter. Lochte converted both free throws to cut the lead to 12-6.

Tucker McMullan hit a three-pointer from the right wing with 3:21 remaining to cut the lead to three. Lochte again hit a bucket from the left post to make it 14-11.

With the Panthers trailing 21-14, Nate Casey finished an easy layup with 0:24 seconds remaining to end the first quarter

In the second quarter, the Panthers cut the lead to one point after a put back by Casey and Clayton Oehrlein, and then two free throws by Lochte.

Liberty Hill took their first lead of the game when Austin Maxwell hit a shot from the left post on a nice pass from Logan Gillentine.

Lowe hit a three-pointer with 4:36 remaining in the second quarter to give the Panthers a 27-24 lead. A layup by Casey gave the Panthers a three-point, 29-26 lead with three minutes remaining. Lehman then hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 29-all.

Lehman hit another three-pointer to take the lead with two minutes remaining, 32-29. Gillentine finished off an easy layup from a pass by Casey to cut the lead to 32-31. Lowe’s three-pointer tied the game with 0:15 seconds remaining in the half.

The Panthers took a 40-38 lead to start the third quarter after Casey got a steal that lead to an easy fastbreak layup. Oehrlein then put the Panthers up 42-41 on a put back from underneath the basket with 3:30 remaining. Locthe would go to the line after he was fouled with 0:45 seconds remaining. He would hit both and give the Panthers a 46-43 lead. Gillentine would hit a shot from underneath the basket to end the third quarter with a 48-43 lead for the Panthers.

The Panthers would start the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run after buckets by Gillentine, and Casey converting an and-one opportunity. Liberty Hill would take an 11-point lead with 4:42 remaining in the game after Casey found Fleming in the right post for an easy shot. Lehman would battle back to cut the deficit to five points with three minutes remaining.

Lehman would then go on a 5-4 run to cut the lead to one point with six seconds remaining in the game. Lowe was fouled with four seconds and hit one of his free throws to put the Panthers up by two points. Lowe then stole the ball on an inbound pass with two seconds remaining to seal the victory for the JV boys.
