Dray Luckadoo, a junior at Liberty Hill High School, was recently selected second chair alto saxophone player in the All-State Jazz Band.
Son of Ray and Sheri Luckadoo, Dray will represent Liberty Hill at the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio in February.
“Dray has really lit on fire about jazz in the last couple of years,” said Jazz Band Director Kevin Baird. “ He has always been interested in jazz — one year he played ‘In the Mood’ for a solo piece — and the last couple of years he has grown a lot in his ability.
“He has good style and sound and enjoys the whole atomsphere of the Jazz Band,” Baird said. “We’re all very proud of Dray and excited for him to get this chance to experience this.”
In September, Dray auditioned in Wimberley to play lead alto for the Region Jazz Ensemble from among more than 20 students, said Baird. That concert will be Jan. 19 at Texas State University in San Marcos. He was selected to record his audition for the All-State Jazz Ensemble and the recording was sent to an Area Jazz Listening Audition where the entry was chosen as second from among 32 entries.
Dray has been in Liberty Hill’s band program since the sixth grade.
“Each day (in band) brings something special,” he said.
Dray said he plans to attend MIT after graduation and become an engineer.
