Chase Roberts, a mechanic with the Liberty Hill ISD, won the Texas Best Competition, a statewide contest held by Texas Association of School Bus Technicians.
Roberts will be presented with the award on Sept. 13, and later this month, will head to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, for the national competition. There, he will face two winners from each state.
“They bug a bus, give it some problems, and you have to figure out what is wrong. It’s a timed event, so whoever finishes faster wins,” he said. “There is also a written test, where they go over specs, it’s all ASE things, ‘What should you do?’ type stuff.”
In this competition, Roberts faced a bus with multiple issues.
“The lights didn’t work, the A/C compressor was out. They had a tire off, and you had to figure out that the alignment was off. There was an EGR (valve) issue, so we had to go on the computer and do the diagnostics,” he said.
Roberts faced approximately 20 other school bus mechanics from across the state.
Roberts is new to LHISD, coming here with new Transportation Director, Fritz Klabunde, from Eanes ISD.
