Thelma Cantrell, 88, most recently of Florence, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012, with her family by her side. Visitation was held on Monday, July 2, 2012 at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH 35, Georgetown, Texas. A service celebrating Thelma’s life and her faith was held on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel. Interment followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
Thelma was born May 29, 1924 in Kempner, Texas to the late Archie and Annie Ophia Cowan Baird. Her family moved around some as she was growing up, to find work. They settled in Pond Springs, Texas in 1946. It was in 1947 that Thelma met her future husband in Jollyville, at a country social, Merlon Cantrell. They had a two month whirlwind romance and were married on August 22, 1947.
Merlon worked construction and they moved some with his work, but they spent many years in Liberty Hill. Thelma was a loving mother and grandmother, she spent her life caring for and loving her family. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Embroidering and sewing were a specialty of Thelma’s, she has left her family with special pieces of her work that they will cherish for years to come.
Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Annie Baird and her son, Truman Wallace Cantrell. Thelma leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of 65 years, Merlon Cantrell; her sons, Larry Cantrell and his wife Sue and Russel Cantrell and his wife Anna; 22 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; along with many other loving family members and friends.
