While the Liberty Hill baseball and softball teams continue to swing their bats, the varsity tennis team is doing the same with their rackets as they close in on the district tournament.
Team members include Chesney Goza, Rachael Corona, Khoi Pham, Cameron Speegle, Malory Dobias, Margaret Krizan, Hannah Schaefer, Kaity Warner, Drake Duncan, Robert Nickle, Bo Mille, Conner Gillespi, Christian Bunting, Amy Sarcinella, Grahm Vaandrager and Heather Havens.
On March 23, the Liberty Hill tennis team traveled to Wimberley where senior Khoi Pham won the conciliation in the boys singles bracket. On the girls side, Chesney Goza, defending district champ, took second place.
This Friday, Liberty Hill will get one final tune up at a competition in Robinson before the district tournament April 3-4 in Llano.
Panthers Coach Anthony Escobar is pleased with how the season has played out thus far, in what he considers a very competitive district.
“We are in a very competitive district for tennis with Lampasas,” he said. “Coming off a third-place finish in team tennis this year, we have our work cut out for us.”
On Monday, March 26, District 25-3A officials met to name seedings for the upcoming tournament. The highest seed awarded to a Liberty Hill player went to Goza, who snagged the No. 2 seed on the girls side.
With good showings in Wimberley, Coach Escobar is looking forward to similar results in Llano for the district tournament.
“Tuesday and Wednesday is our district tennis tournament,” Escobar said. “Chesney (Goza) comes off a second-place finish at the Wimberley tournament last Friday. Also Senior Khoi Pham won conciliation for boys singles at the Wimberley tournament, so he should have a good showing at district.”
The District 25-3A Tennis Tournament will be held in Llano on April 3-4, beginning at 8 a.m. The regional tournament will follow on April 16-19 in Corpus Christi.
