The Liberty Hill Cemetery Association held its annual Homecoming celebration June 5. It was a time to share memories, learn about the history of the cemetery and raise funds to help with its maintenance.
For 52 years, Homecoming at the Cemetery has a been an anticipated event every summer for Liberty Hill residents and families that have since moved away. It is an opportunity to reunite with old friends, make new ones, and remember relatives who have passed.
The Liberty Hill Cemetery is currently home to more than 3,200 gravesites on more than 20 shady acres. The earliest known burial was in 1852.
Featured speakers were County Commissioner Cynthia Long and Liberty Hill school Superintendent Dr. Rob Hart, both of whom spoke about future growth in Liberty Hill.
Commissioner Long spoke of the good things that would be coming as a result of the U.S. Highway 183-A expansion, pointing to Cedar Park as the example of well-controlled growth.
Hart spoke of residential subdivisions planned for the area and the growth of Liberty Hill school enrollment.
Liberty Hill Cemetery Association President James Hanley said that although fewer people seemed to attend the event this year, it was just as meaningful.
“We used to get about 1,200-1,500 people out there. This year there was only about 650. But it’s a great way to raise the money we need,” he said.
“People don’t realize we don’t charge annual dues, we get nothing from the BBQ (plates sold at event), we exist on donations. There’s a lot of work out there. It’s not an easy job. There’s a lot of handwork…it’s a lot more than just mowing,” he said.
Hanley said that the smaller turnout was in part due to not having updated contact information on some people.
“We try to get everybody, but people move around. We send the notice out to the last known address that we have,” he said.
Those who wish to update their contact information and be added to the Association’s mailing list should contact the Liberty Hill Cemetery Association at P.O. Box 73, Liberty Hill, TX 78642 or call (512) 778-6792.
